Benne Dosa is a traditional dosa of Karnataka, especially Dakshina Kannada and Udupi region. ‘Benne’ means butter in Kannada language. The specialty of this dosa is its thickness, soft texture and abundant butter on it. It is slightly smaller than the common tadka dosa but is thick and very soft. It is usually served with coconut chutney and sambar, which doubles its taste.
Recipe to make Benne Dosa at home
Ingredients: 2 cups rice, 1/2 cup urad dal, 1/4 cup chana dal, 1/4 cup poha, salt to taste, and water to grind the batter. Method of preparation: Soak rice and poha separately for 4-5 hours. Soak urad dal and chana dal also for 4-5 hours. Grind the pulses and keep them aside, then grind the rice and poha and mix them. Add salt and stir well. Leave the batter to ferment overnight or for 8-10 hours. Fermentation is what gives the right texture to the dosa.
How to make Dosa
Heat a non-stick pan, apply some oil. Take a tablespoon of the batter and spread it in the middle of the pan, make it round and thick (not thin). Put one spoon butter (Benne) on top and spread it. Cook on medium flame till the bottom becomes golden, flip and cook lightly on the other side. Serve with hot coconut chutney and sambar.
