New Delhi. National Minorities Commission chief Iqbal Singh Lalpura said on Wednesday that the Center and the Jharkhand government have decided that the Jain site Sammed Shikharji will remain a pilgrimage center and not be converted into a tourist center. Will be done. Lalpura said that the commission had heard the matter on Tuesday where the Jharkhand government assured that it would soon issue an order in this regard. Lalpura said in a press conference here, ‘People of the Jain community are demonstrating in Jharkhand regarding Sammed Shikhar. It has been decided that this place of pilgrimage will remain the same.
Iqbal Singh Lalpura said, ‘Liquor or meat will not be allowed there. We intervened in the matter and we thank the Central and Jharkhand governments for paying attention to our recommendation. We had a hearing yesterday and it was decided that it will not be converted into a tourist center and it will remain a religious place. Lalpura said that the Jain community is satisfied with this decision. The commission had earlier said that it has received several representations from the community against the conversion of Jain pilgrimage site Shree Sammed Shikharji as a tourist center by the Jharkhand and Central governments. Parasnath mountain peak located in Madhuban of Giridih district of Jharkhand is the abode of 20 out of 24 Tirthankaras of Jainism.
Central government had banned tourism activities on Parasnath mountain
On January 5, the central government had banned all tourism-related activities on Parasnath mountain where Sammed Shikharji is located. The Jharkhand government was directed to take necessary steps to protect the sanctity of the site. Earlier, Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav had met various representatives of the Jain community on this issue and assured them that the government is committed to maintaining the sanctity of the ‘Sammed Shikharji mountain area’.
