One of the high points of Sharad Yadav’s life was when he defeated Lalu Prasad Yadav from the Madhepura parliamentary seat in the 1999 general elections. This victory also got him a ministerial post in the Vajpayee government. However, his relations with Lalu also improved. Yadav left JDU and formed a new party, Loktantrik Janata Dal, and after its failure, he merged his party with Lalu’s party Rashtriya Janata Dal. (File photo)

In political life, Sharad Yadav had close relations with many big leaders. Yadav, who once supported Lalu-Nitish, also had a good relationship with Mulayam Singh Yadav. However, relations with these three leaders also soured. (File Photo)

Sharad Yadav’s long political life was also surrounded by controversies. In 2009, Yadav also threatened to commit suicide while opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament. Yadav said that this would only benefit women with ‘parakati’ ie short hair. (File Photo)
