Virender Sehwag is the first batsman to score a triple century in Tests for India. Before him, VVS Laxman had come close to this figure in the 2001 Kolkata Test, but he was dismissed for 281 runs. Recently, on a cricket show, Laxman shared an interesting anecdote related to Sehwag’s first triple century, how Viru had promised him in 2001 itself that he would score a triple century in Tests.
New Delhi. Former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag is counted among the most aggressive batsmen in the world. He batted in all three formats in Test, ODI and T20. His strike rate testifies to this. Sehwag’s strike rate was 82.23 in Tests, 104 in ODIs and more than 145 in T20s. The big bowlers of the world used to fear him. Once Viru’s bat was gone, then it was not easy for any team to stop him. Fellow players are also convinced of this quality of his. VVS Laxman, who was Sehwag’s partner in Team India for a long time, has shared an interesting anecdote related to his first triple century, how in 2001, Sehwag had promised him that he would score the first triple century in Tests for India.
Laxman told the story related to Sehwag’s first triple century in Star Sports’ show ‘India Greatest Wins’. Laxman told that in 2001 Australia came to India tour. We had registered a historic win in the Test series. I scored 281 runs in Kolkata. This was followed by a series of five ODIs against Australia. The first match was in Bangalore. During this match, Sehwag’s hand was fractured, but he was touring with the team due to lack of reports. We were all having food in the hotel. Then Sehwag came to me and he said that Laxman bhai you missed. You had a chance to become the first Indian to score a triple century. I will do that.

Sehwag had faith in his abilities: LaxmanLaxman further told that I was surprised to hear about Sehwag because he was not in the Test team then. It came to my mind how in 2001 someone could have told me that he would become the first batsman to score a triple century for India in Tests, even though he was not in the Test team. This shows how confident Sehwag was in his abilities. Also read: India got its first victory in Lord’s after 54 years, know who was the hero of victory?Sehwag scored a century on Test debutIn 2001, Sehwag made his Test debut on the tour of South Africa and scored a century in the very first Test itself. Three years later, on the tour of Pakistan, that moment came which Sehwag had mentioned to Laxman. He scored the first triple century in the Multan Test against Pakistan on 29 March 2004 and also became the first Indian to do so. Sehwag had completed his triple century in this match with a six. An anecdote related to this, Laxman told that then Sachin was standing at the other end and he was more nervous than Sehwag about the triple century.
29th March- a special date for me. Had the privilege and honor of becoming the first Indian to score a triple hundred in Test cricket. Icing in the cake was to score against Pakistan in Multan.
Sehwag scored two triple centuries in four yearsStrange coincidence that exactly four years after this innings, he scored his second triple century in the Chennai Test against South Africa. He had completed a triple century on 28 March and on the very next day i.e. on 29 March, he was dismissed after scoring 319 runs. Don Bradman of Australia was the first batsman to score two triple centuries in Test cricket. After him Virender Sehwag, Brian Lara and Chris Gayle have scored two triple centuries in Test matches.
Karun Nair is the second batsman to score a triple century for India. He achieved this feat against England. Sehwag is also the second Indian after Sachin to score a double century in ODIs.
