France A surprising discovery has come to light under the sea near the western coast of India. Here divers have found a long stone wall and many other man-made structures around it. According to scientists, these structures are about 7 thousand years old. This discovery took place near the island of Île de Seine in the Brittany region. The largest wall is about 120 meters long and about 12 smaller structures from the same period have also been found around it.
How did this discovery come to light?
This story starts from the year 2017. Retired geologist Ives Fuke was looking at maps made under the surface of the ocean. These maps were prepared with laser technology. In these maps he saw some shapes which did not appear natural. After this the team of scientists started in-depth work at this place.
From 2022 to 2024, divers descended into the sea several times and investigated this area. After investigation it became clear that these structures were made of granite stones and were built by humans only.
Even scientists were surprised
The most surprising thing for scientists was that despite such a difficult marine environment, these structures were found safe to a great extent. The strong currents and salty water of the sea usually damage the stones as well. Despite this, finding these structures in such good condition is a big thing for archeology experts.
Archeology professor Ivan Payer of the University of Western Brittany says that this discovery opens new avenues for underwater archaeology. This will help in understanding what kind of life the people living on the seashore lived thousands of years ago.
when the sea was lower than today
According to research, these structures were built between 5800 and 5300 BC. Today they are about 9 meters below the sea surface. But when they were built, the sea water was much lower than today. At that time, this area might have been the sea shore, where people used to live and work.
For what purpose would the walls have been built?
Scientists believe that these walls can be used for catching fish. It is possible that the people of that time used these walls to trap fish. Another hypothesis is that these structures may have been built to protect themselves from the rising sea water.
A glimpse of the technology and society of that era
This discovery also shows that the people of that time had good technical understanding. Many stones weigh several tons. Cutting such heavy stones, carrying them from one place to another and then erecting them in the right way is not an easy task. This means that the society of that period must have been organized and people must have done great things together.
Research has also said that such technical information could be hundreds of years older than the big stone monuments found in France. That means man had learned to build with big stones long ago.
