After harvesting of paddy, a large amount of residue is left in the fields. Many farmers in the district are taking this stubble home and using it as fodder for animals. The Agriculture Department is also continuously advising the farmers that instead of burning the stubble in the fields, they should use it as fodder, fertilizer or mulching. On the other hand, some farmers still set fire to the stubble in the field due to haste or lack of knowledge. Burning stubble not only pollutes the environment but also affects the fertility of the soil.
Satellite monitoring support
To prevent these incidents, the department has resorted to satellite monitoring. As soon as fire activity is recorded in any field, the district administration immediately gets information about it. After this, Agriculture Department officials reach the spot and verify. After verification, if the farmer is found guilty then action is taken against him.
Farmers are being made aware
In this regard, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Lakhimpur Kheri Girish Chandra said that farmers are being continuously made aware through loudspeakers and gram sabhas. It is being explained to them that burning stubble is a legal offense and it not only increases pollution but also damages the soil of the fields. He said that by adopting scientific methods of stubble management, farmers will remain profitable and the environment will also be safe. Till now, the administration has collected revenue of about Rs 1,25,000 from the farmers caught burning stubble.
