New Delhi. Former England spinner Monty Panesar recently made a lot of headlines for saying that India is more a team of head coach Ravi Shastri than skipper Virat Kohli. Citing the example of India’s Test series win in Australia earlier this year, Panesar said it was Shastri’s “self-confidence” that gave the audience a chance to celebrate despite Kohli’s departure after the first match. Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt disagrees with Panesar’s view and termed the statement as unconstitutional.
The Indian team had to face defeat against Australia by eight wickets in the first Test match of the four Tests. After this, Captain Kohli left the series to stay with his pregnant wife Anushka Sharma and returned home. Team India won the series 2–1, defying all odds. Panesar believes that Shastri’s hand is behind the success of India but Butt argued that Kohli’s contribution cannot be removed.

Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel, ‘I don’t understand why someone would need to say such a thing. Virat has scored so many runs, was it possible to get such a good win ratio without it? No way. He was not there for a series, we can consider it a failure. One or two unsuccessful series are normal but still you cannot take away their contribution. Similarly, the positive impact of a coach ensures that the team is with them. ‘The 36-year-old former Pakistani cricketer further said that both Kohli and Shastri are equally important to Indian cricket. Both (Shastri and Kohli) are happy working together. I believe both are equally important to the team. In fact, every member of the team is valuable. When all of them are happily working together as a team, why would you say that it is one team that is more than the other? I do not know what context and logic they have used.
The Indian team is currently preparing for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC 2021 Final) final against New Zealand. The match will be played at the Ages Bowl in Southampton from 18 June. The team captained by Virat Kohli will fly from Mumbai to England on 2 June.
