Borer Insect Effect On Sarai Tree: The Sarai (Sal) tree, which grows naturally in Surguja district of Chhattisgarh, is facing serious crisis these days. In this tribal dominated area, Sarai tree is an important part of people’s daily needs and livelihood. But in recent times, the attack of an insect called borer on Sarai trees is increasing rapidly, which hollows the tree from inside and gradually dries it up. Due to this insect, not only the Sarai trees are being destroyed, but it is also likely to have a deep impact on the environment, greenery and the daily routine of the tribal community in the coming times. Agricultural experts say that if prevention is not done in time, this problem can become worse. However, agricultural experts have also suggested some important measures to protect Sarai trees from borer pests, see this report…
Sal tree grows naturally
Agriculture expert Sanjay Yadav told Local 18 that Sarai or Sal tree is completely natural. It is not planted in any way. It grows spontaneously in forests and plays an important role in environmental protection. Sal tree not only increases greenery, but also contributes significantly in maintaining temperature balance and oxygen levels.
Tree becoming hollow from inside due to borer insect
According to Sanjay Yadav, the outbreak of an insect called borer is being seen in Sal trees for some time. This insect makes holes in the tree trunk and weakens it from within. Due to the effects of insects, the tree gradually dries up and eventually has to be cut. Its maximum impact is being seen in Mainpat area of Surguja district, where a large number of Sal trees are being affected.
Take preventive measures in time
Regarding pest control, the agricultural expert said that the trees where symptoms of borer or termites are visible, should be immediately coated with Bodo paste. Also, by spraying insecticides and Bodo paste in the soil around the tree, effective control of both termites and borers can be achieved. By taking timely measures, trees can be saved from drying up and destruction.
Tribal lifestyle and medicinal importance
Sal tree is considered very important medicinally in tribal and rural areas. It is used as forest produce. Soap and many types of cosmetics are prepared from Sal fruit. Even today, people in tribal areas use ‘Mukhari’ in the form of toothpick, which is considered very beneficial for teeth. Due to its medicinal properties, the teeth of elderly people remain strong even from 70-80 to 90 years of age.
Concern about environment and future
Expressing concern, Sanjay Yadav said that if the destruction of Sal trees continues like this, it will have a direct impact on the tribal lifestyle, environment, greenery, beautification, oxygen level and temperature. This may disturb the ecological balance of the entire area.
Demand for initiative from the government
Agricultural experts and environmental lovers believe that the government should take serious steps in this direction. Pest control campaigns, monitoring and conservation plans should be implemented from time to time, so that important natural trees like Sal can be saved and this natural heritage can be preserved for the future generations.
