IMD Weather Today: Various parts of India are being affected by weather these days. Due to dense fog in North and East India, normal life has been adversely affected. Fog has had a widespread impact on rail, road and air traffic. Many trains are running behind schedule. Weather experts have predicted the cold outbreak to increase further before Christmas.
IMD Weather Today: Various parts of the country are being affected by the weather these days. Due to dense fog, the traffic system from ground to sky has broken down. Due to very low visibility, many vehicles collided with each other on Yamuna Expressway, due to which a major accident occurred. Now weather experts have predicted two types of weather conditions simultaneously. On one hand, the Meteorological Department says that there will be very dense fog in many states from Uttar Pradesh to Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha and North-East. Due to this, normal life is sure to be derailed. On the other hand, due to rapid activation of Western Disturbance, there is a possibility of increase in wind speed. This can provide great relief to millions of people of Delhi-NCR before Christmas. If the mercury falls further due to strong cold winds, there is also a possibility of reduction in air pollution. Due to higher wind speed, a decline in AQI level can be recorded. However, on the morning of Wednesday 17 December 2025, AQI 378 was recorded in Bawana area of Delhi which was in the poor category. Meanwhile, in view of the dense fog, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has asked the people of the concerned states to exercise caution and remain alert.
The cold of December has now started showing its effect in many parts of the country. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of dense to very dense fog in the morning in many areas of North India, Central India and North-East India between 17 and 21 December. Along with this, cold wave conditions may also arise in some states, due to which normal life as well as road, rail and air traffic may be affected. The Meteorological Department said that there is a possibility of dense to very dense fog in the morning in some areas of Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh during December 17 to 20. Especially in Uttar Pradesh, very dense fog may occur at many places on December 17, while this situation may persist in some areas on December 18 also. Apart from this, a warning has been issued of dense fog in the morning from 17 to 21 December in different areas of North-West and North-East India.

In which states there will be dense fog and for how long?
There is a possibility of dense fog in Punjab from 17 to 20 December, in Himachal Pradesh from 17 to 19 December and in Haryana and Chandigarh from 18 to 20 December. Fog may prevail in Uttarakhand, Western Madhya Pradesh and Odisha in the morning on 17 and 18 December. The effect of fog can also be seen in the states of North-East India between 17 and 21 December. Along with fog, cold wave conditions are also being created in some areas. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of cold wave in Western Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and North Interior Karnataka on 17 and 18 December. The minimum temperature in these areas may go below normal, which will increase the effect of cold.

How will be the temperature?
Talking about the minimum temperature forecast, there is a possibility of no significant change in the temperature in North-West India for the next three days. After this, the minimum temperature may gradually increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in the next four days. There will be no significant change in the temperature in Gujarat for the next 24 hours, but after that there may be an increase of 2 to 3 degrees in three days. There is a possibility of no major change in the minimum temperature for the next seven days in the rest of the country.
What advice has IMD given?
The Meteorological Department has advised people to remain alert. Visibility can be significantly reduced due to dense fog, which increases the risk of road and rail accidents. Drivers have been advised to take special care in the morning, drive slowly and use fog lights. At the same time, people in the areas affected by cold wave have been appealed to wear warm clothes and take special care of children and the elderly.
