Reasons For Urine Turning Red Or Pink: Seeing urine turn red or pink can sometimes be a cause for concern, but in every situation it is not a sign of disease. According to experts, consumption of beetroot, berries or some medicines can also change the color of urine, while in some cases it also indicates infection or other health problems. In such a situation, it is important to understand the symptoms.
Rishikesh : Suddenly seeing red or pink color of urine can scare anyone. Often the first thought that comes to mind is whether this is a sign of some serious disease. But red urine is not an alarm bell every time. In many cases, this may be due to our diet, especially the consumption of beetroot. Beetroot is a nutritious vegetable, which is considered beneficial for health. But changing the color of urine in some people after eating it is a common but less known condition.
Dr. Rajkumar (Ayush) told Local 18 that a natural red pigment is found in beetroot, which is called betanin. This pigment gives beetroot its deep red color. This pigment is not completely broken down in the body of some people. When this happens, this pigment is released through urine. For this reason the color of urine starts appearing red or pink. This condition may seem scary, but in most cases it is completely harmless.
Side effects of eating beetroot
Redness of urine after eating beetroot is called beturia in medical language. This is not a disease but a temporary condition. Beturia does not occur in all people. It is believed that people who are deficient in iron or whose digestive system is a little sensitive are more likely to have it. Generally, the color of urine can change within 6 to 24 hours of eating beetroot and it becomes normal on its own after some time.
Is beeturia dangerous for health?
In most cases, beturia is not dangerous to health. It neither harms the kidneys nor indicates any serious disease. As soon as betanin is eliminated from the body, the color of urine also becomes normal. Therefore, if you have recently eaten beetroot, beetroot juice or any dish made from it, then there is no need to panic.
Urine can also turn red due to these reasons
However, it is not right to ignore red urine every time. If you have not eaten beetroot or anything red in color and your urine still looks red, it could be a sign of some other problem. Blood in the urine, called hematuria, can be caused by kidney stones, urine infection, or other diseases. Apart from this, if there is pain, burning sensation, fever or difficulty while urinating along with red urine, then it should be taken seriously.
