New Delhi. There are news and social media doing rounds about only Halal meat being served in trains. People are also raising various types of questions regarding this. Meanwhile, Railway Ministry and IRCTC have responded. Railways has said that it is not at all necessary to obtain Halal certificate for serving non-veg food in trains.
According to the Railway spokesperson, the chicken or meat being served in trains is only as per the rules of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). There is no mandatory condition for it to be halal or jhatka. He also said that the same question was raised on social media in July 2023 and the same answer was given at that time also. Recently, some media reports claimed that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a notice to the Railways asking why only Halal meat is being served.
No notice received
Rejecting this outright, Railways said that no such notice has been received nor is there any guideline in which it is mandatory to serve only Halal certified meat. IRCTS also presented its side. He said that all catering contractors and vendors have to follow only FSSAI standards. Taking Halal certificate or not is entirely up to the contractor’s discretion.
Railway’s appeal
Railways has appealed to the passengers not to pay attention to rumours, whatever food is served in the train is completely safe and as per legal standards. If anyone has any complaint, he can register it on IRCTC helpline or Railmad app. After this statement, the Halal-Jhatka controversy has come to an end for the time being.
