New Delhi: Common people have the highest expectations from the top court of the country i.e. the Supreme Court. People know that if justice is not provided then it will definitely be provided in the Supreme Court. But often long deadlines, rising expenses and years old case files become a big barrier between getting justice. To address this concern, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has made a big announcement. The common man will really feel relieved after hearing this announcement.
CJI Surya Kant clearly said that the Supreme Court is not only for big lawyers and big battles, but for every common citizen. His priority now is faster disposal of old cases, cheaper justice system and time bound decisions under a single policy.
Why did CJI say – Supreme Court is for the common man
The CJI clearly said that he is going to bring such changes which will give a clear message that the Supreme Court is not only for big cases but is equally important for the common citizens. He told that the case listing process will be changed and common litigants will also be given priority.

What is the new plan?
For the first time, the Supreme Court is going to take steps towards formulating a national judicial policy, in which there will be a fixed time limit for disposal of each case. According to CJI, it is impossible to end the cases. But it is important to reduce the pile of old cases.
Mediation will become a game-changer
CJI said that in future, mediation can become the biggest weapon to resolve cases quickly. He also enumerated its benefits-
- Hearing becomes sharper.
- Expenses are greatly reduced.
- Bitterness does not increase in relationships.
- The solution is acceptable to both parties.
Digital Crime: A New Test for the Judiciary
CJI said that digital arrests, cyber crimes and online fraud are increasing rapidly in the country. Therefore, now the courts will have to update themselves according to such technical challenges. He stressed that judges and officers would be given special training on the new crime pattern.
Diversity in Judiciary: More opportunities for women and deprived sections
CJI said that the society has changed, hence it is necessary to increase diversity in the courts also. He told that now in the top court-
- From different states.
- From different communities.
- Especially from women and deprived classes.
- Special attention is being given to increasing the number of judges.
Balance of three institutions: CJI’s views on independence of judiciary
Speaking on the independence of the judiciary, the CJI said that the Indian Constitution has made clear the roles of the three pillars of legislature, executive and judiciary. But at the same time it has also been ensured that there is mutual harmony and cooperation between the three institutions. He said, we all work to complement each other, but also maintain our independent identities.
