Aloo Ki Kheti: There is a great danger of frost to the potato crop till January 15. Due to which the leaves start scorching and the yield is badly affected. Agriculture expert Dr. Pramod Kumar has given some easy tips to prevent this. By following these, farmers can get good production along with knowing the crop.
Palamau Potato cultivation is a major source of income for farmers in Rabi season. In Jharkhand-Bihar, farmers sow potatoes on a large scale. Between December and January the potato crop is in the critical stage of growth and tuber formation. If the temperature is favorable at this time, the yield is good, but a little carelessness can spoil all the hard work. Especially during winter, sudden change in weather becomes a big threat to potato cultivation. Therefore, regular monitoring and timely management of the crop becomes very important at this time.
Frost problem common in potatoes
Dr. Pramod Kumar, agricultural expert of Regional Research Center Chiyanki, said that the risk of frost is highest between December 15 and January 15. As the temperature falls, the possibility of frost increases, which has a direct impact on frost-sensitive crops like potato, pigeon pea, tomato. Due to frost, potato leaves get scorched, due to which the plants are unable to produce food. The result is that at the stage where the potato tubers are, their development stops. Due to this, the tubers remain small and there is a huge decline in yield. Sometimes even the entire crop may get spoiled.
These are the preventive measures
He further said that it is important for farmers to be alert in advance to protect themselves from frost. By doing light irrigation in the fields from time to time, the temperature remains balanced and the effect of frost is reduced. If dew drops are seen shining on the grass or crops early in the morning, it could be a sign of frost. In such a situation, farmers can take help of fungicides. Medicines like Indofil M-45, Ridomil or Mancozeb provide some protection to the leaves and reduce the damage.
Keep these things in mind
He further said that these medicines should be sprayed at the rate of 2.5 grams per liter of water. Spraying in calm weather in the morning or evening is more effective. After spraying once, the effect remains for about 12-13 days. Along with this, it is also beneficial to smoke the fields, burn dry grass or crop residues and irrigate from time to time. In view of the continuous drop in temperature, farmers should keep an eye on the weather, so that the entire crop can be saved from frost in time.
