Faridabad: Burning eyes, sore throat and difficulty in breathing as soon as they step out of the house in the morning have become a reality for the people of Faridabad and Gurugram. There is a thick blanket of smog in the sky and the air has become so poisonous that even breathing has become a threat to health. The Air Quality Index (AQI) figures themselves reveal the seriousness of the situation.

The situation in Faridabad is very worrying. AQI has been recorded in dangerous category in almost all areas of the city. AQI in Bhikam Colony reached 1065 which is many times higher than the normal level. AQI was recorded at 1141 at Faridabad Station-3, while it was 601 at Station-1. 543 AQI was recorded in Nathu Colony, 621 in New Industrial Town and 854 in Sector-10 HBC. Apart from this, the air is not breathable in Sector-11 (541), Sector-14 (678), Sector-16A (633), Sector-30 (535), Sector-65 (722), Sector-77 (898), Sector-82 (563) and Sector-9 (850). Such high AQI level is directly affecting children, elderly and people suffering from respiratory diseases.

Even in Gurugram the situation is no better

Even in Gurugram the situation is no better. The air quality here is oscillating between poor to very poor category. In many areas, AQI has crossed 150 to 280. In Sector-51, AQI of PM2.5 has been recorded at 172, while in areas like DLF Phase-1, Sector-14, Sector-31, Sector-49 and Golf Course Road, the level of PM10 and PM2.5 is so high that they have been kept in the dangerous category. People in these areas are being advised not to leave their homes unnecessarily.

Vehicle smoke, industrial activities, construction work and bad weather are considered to be the major reasons behind this increasing level of pollution. Due to low wind speed, pollutant particles are trapped in the atmosphere. Doctors say that in such circumstances it is important to wear a mask, avoid morning and evening walks and stop children from playing outside. At present, clean air is no less than a relief for the people of Faridabad and Gurugram, but there is a strong need to take concrete steps to improve the situation.
