Kitchen Garden Tips: Cardamom plant can be easily grown in a pot at home. Usually the seeds germinate in 7-10 days, but it takes time to become a completely strong plant. If there is light sunlight and moisture in the place, then cardamom can be easily grown in a pot indoors.
To grow it in a pot, you can use small cardamom seeds or a plant purchased from the market. Growing from seed is a bit difficult, so purchasing plants is a better option for beginning gardeners. Choose a healthy plant whose leaves are green and shiny. Before purchasing the plant, ensure that the temperature of your area is suitable for cardamom.
Cardamom requires a deep and wide pot, choose a pot of at least 12 to 14 inches. The soil should be fertile and well drained. For this, prepare a mixture of 50% normal soil, 30% earthworm manure and 20% sand or coco peat. There must be a hole at the bottom of the pot so that excess water can drain out.
The cardamom plant cannot tolerate direct, strong sunlight. Keep it at a place where it gets 4-5 hours of filtered light a day. Light morning sunlight is best for this. If you are keeping it indoors, place it near a window where there is enough light. It thrives better in moist and shady environments.

The cardamom plant likes constant moisture, but water should not stagnate in the pot. Always keep the soil slightly moist. In summer, water daily or alternate days, and reduce the amount of water in winter. To maintain moisture in the air around the plant, it is also necessary to spray water on the leaves from time to time.
Cardamom plant needs regular nutrition for healthy growth. Give it balanced organic fertilizer once every 3 to 4 months. You can also use liquid fertilizer, such as compost tea or mustard cake solution. Giving potassium rich fertilizer at the time of flowering and fruit formation helps in increasing its production.
The cardamom plant usually starts bearing fruits in 3 to 4 years. After flowers, fruits appear on the stem near the ground. When the fruits start turning from green to light yellow, cut them. After harvesting, dry the fruits in the sun or in a dryer. Store dried cardamom in an airtight container.
