A person of interest has been arrested in connection with a US shooting at Brown University that left two people dead, police said.
Nine other people were injured when a gunman opened fire at a college in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday.
Police confirmed Sunday that one person had been detained and that an earlier order for people on and around Brown’s campus to take shelter had been lifted.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said seven people remained in stable condition, one of them was in critical but stable condition and another was released.
The gunman opened fire in a classroom around 4:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. GMT) Saturday in the Holley Engineering Building on the east end of Brown’s campus, according to officials.
The identities of those killed or injured have not yet been made public, but Brown University President Christina Paxson told reporters at a news conference Saturday that all of the victims, including those killed and injured, were students.
In a statement released by the university on Sunday, Paxson said some areas of the campus were still restricted as police continued their investigations.
About 2,000 students were relocated to safe locations overnight, she said, adding that she was “deeply moved” by the students and locals who opened their homes, Paxson said.
He added that support was being given to the families of the two murdered students.
“There are not enough words of comfort for families who lose a child, but we will do everything we can,” he said.
Police had previously released CCTV footage of a male suspect walking away from the scene dressed all in black. Officers said no firearm was found in a sweep of the building.
After the person was detained on Sunday, Police Chief Oscar Perez confirmed that officers were not looking for anyone else and were working with prosecutors to gather evidence.
Smiley said the city should be able to “breathe a little easier” after the shelter-in-place order was lifted.
“We have trained for this moment, but this is not something any community should train for,” he added.
Hundreds of police and federal agents were sent to Providence on Saturday to find the suspect.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Saturday, President Donald Trump said the shooting was “a terrible thing.”
The attack on the Ivy League university brings the number of mass shootings in the US this year to 389, according to Gun Violence Archive.
