The Chief Minister said that civil society people, students and journalists should stand up against the misuse of spyware. Banerjee said the spyware installers also had detailed information about the election strategy meetings held between Prashant Kishor and him. Banerjee termed the alleged espionage as a “great emergency”. The chief minister, at a press conference at the state secretariat here, alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government has politicized all impartial institutions.
He said, “Pegasus is more dangerous than the Watergate scandal, it is a great emergency. It is noteworthy that the Watergate episode was related to the spying of the Democratic Party of America and due to this Nixon had to resign. “They (BJP leadership) don’t even trust their ministers and officials. I have heard that he tapped the phones of many Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) people. ”
He said, “Press Club, Editors Guild, everyone should unite. BJP is trying to scare the media. The Chief Minister said that when such a big matter has come up, then it becomes the responsibility of the Prime Minister or the Union Home Minister to make a statement in Parliament.
He alleged, “Instead of doing this, they are trying to suppress those who raise their voice against them. They are trying to suppress the voice of Dainik Bhaskar who raised his voice against the misrule of BJP. ”
It is noteworthy that the Income Tax Department on Thursday raided the offices of Dainik Bhaskar on charges of tax evasion. Banerjee said, “His game is dangerous. The people of India will not support this dictatorship. ”
