The entire family is in panic after suddenly receiving a GST notice of Rs 35 crore on a poor laborer from Moga. Someone created a fake company in his name and did a business worth crores, while the laborer was not even aware of it. This shocking case related to misuse of documents has raised many questions on the shortcomings of the system.
New Delhi. Daily wage worker Ajmer Singh, resident of Bohna Chowk, Moga, Punjab, got a big shock when the GST department sent him a notice of tax liability of Rs 35 crore. Ajmer Singh, who runs his household by doing ordinary labour, said that he cannot understand how such a huge tax got added to his name. This is not the first time – in 2022 also he had received a GST notice of Rs 21 lakh, but then no specific action was taken on his complaint.
Fake company exposed: Registration through Aadhaar-PAN
On reaching Ludhiana GST office, Ajmer Singh came to know that a company named Cee Kay International had been registered in his name using his Aadhaar and PAN number. The company was shown in the industrial area of Gill Road and transactions worth crores were going on on the same GST number. Ajmer told that he never got a PAN card made in his life. He suspects that during the Covid pandemic, an organization had collected Aadhaar cards in the name of ration distribution, then someone might have misused their documents.
Uproar over fraud, counselor said – ‘Big injustice to the poor’
The GST department advised Ajmer to immediately lodge a complaint with the police. After this he reached Moga City South police station and gave a written complaint demanding investigation. Local councilor Jagjit Singh ‘Jita’ termed this incident as a deep conspiracy against the poor man and said that running a business worth crores by stealing documents is not only harmful for Ajmer but also causes huge loss to the government’s revenue. He demanded strict action from the administration.
Investigation started, victim hopes for justice
At present, the police have taken the complaint and started investigating the entire matter. The department is trying to find out through which channel Aadhaar and PAN were leaked and which people made the transactions by creating fake companies. Ajmer Singh and his family are hoping that the truth will come out soon and they will get relief from this heavy tax burden.
