Today, on the seventh day of the winter session of Parliament, the much awaited debate is going to take place, which has created a stir in political circles for the last several days. There will be a discussion in the Lok Sabha today for about 10 hours on electoral reforms and especially the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. After the debate in Lok Sabha on Vande Mataram, there will be a discussion in Rajya Sabha today also. Home Minister Amit Shah will initiate this discussion, while BJP President JP Nadda will also give his views on this subject.
After several rounds of tension and talks between the government and the opposition regarding SIR, an agreement was reached on this discussion last week. From the opposition side, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav will take part in this debate, while from the government side, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, PP Chaudhary and BJP MP Nishikant Dubey will present the government’s side.
Since the beginning of the winter session, opposition parties were continuously protesting inside and outside the Parliament regarding SIR. The opposition alleges that this special intensive vetting, started in the name of removing fake and old names, was misused, especially in Bihar, where this process was used against the deprived sections who have traditionally supported the opposition. The opposition claims that due to this, names of voters have been removed on a large scale.
However, the government has completely rejected all these allegations and said that the purpose of SIR is only to make the voter lists clean, accurate and reliable, so that there is no irregularity in the election process.
