Filmmaker Chloe Zhao’s film ‘Nomadland’ has won the Oscar for Best Film at the 93rd Academy Awards. Zhao is the first woman of Asian descent to win an Oscar for Best Director.
Prior to this, she has also won awards for ‘Fargo’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri’. Zhao is the second woman to receive the Best Director award at the Oscars. Catherine Bigelow was the first woman to win an Oscar in 2010 for her film The Hurt Locker.
The film’s cast, McDormand, recounts the theaters that were lost during last year’s pandemic, saying, “The day will soon come when we will enjoy every film in the dark of theaters that have been screened here on this night.” The actress has also produced the film along with Zhao. In her address while receiving the best director award, Zhao mentioned her loyalty to humanity. He said, ‘I always saw goodness in everyone in every corner of the world where I went.’ Zhao (39) came to America as a teenager. He said that later he started thinking how to face difficult situations. ‘Nomadland’ is Zhao’s third film.
In the film based on Jessica Burder’s book of the same name, Frances McDormand plays the fern, a woman who picks up her car in rural Nevada after her company’s economic condition worsens and is a modern nomad outside of traditional society Seeks life.
Directed from ‘Songs My Brothers Taught Me’
The filmmaker made his directorial debut in 2015 with the song ‘Songs My Brothers Taught Me’. His second film ‘Rider’ got him global recognition. Zhao said in his address on Sunday night, ‘My whole team of the film’ Nomadland ‘, we have set a very special journey together. Thank you very much to all of you. I am thankful to all of you.
In the Best Director category, Emerald Fennell (for ‘Promising Young Woman’), Lee Isaac Chung (for ‘Minari’), Thomas Winterberg (for ‘Another Round’) and David Fincher (for ‘Mank’) awards. Were in the race. David Strathearn and Linda May have also worked in ‘Nomadland’. The film has won many awards such as Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTA Awards, Independent Spirit Awards. Actor Riz Ahmed was also considered as a strong contender for the award for his performance in the film ‘Sound of Metal’. Bosman died in 2020 after battling colon cancer for four years.
Other artists nominated in this category include Gary Oldman and Steven Yoon. The actor has won the Oscar award for the second time. Earlier in 1991, he won an Oscar for ‘The Silence of the Lambs’.
Directed by Florin Jailer, ‘The Father’ is based on his own acclaimed play ‘Le Pere’ (The Father). The jailer has also co-written the film. ‘Two Perfect Strangers’ revolving around police brutality against black people in America won the Best Live-Action Short Film while ‘My Octopus Teacher’ won the Best Documentary Award.
