Godda. As soon as the winter season arrives, a special kind of sweet fragrance starts spreading in the markets of Godda and surrounding areas. This fragrance in itself is an indication that Makar Sankranti, which is also known as Lodhi festival in the local language, is near. With this, the popularity of Tilkut has increased in the markets and Tilkut shops have started getting decorated. These days, different varieties of Tilkut are attracting customers in the markets of Godda and Mahagama.
New kind of variety is attracting
Shopkeepers are preparing Tilkut in new ways every day and decorating it in the shops. Shopkeepers say that Tilkut is not just a traditional sweet, but it also has a deep connection with science. Tilkut made from sesame seeds and jaggery provides warmth to the body, hence its demand is more in cold weather. This is the reason why people buy Anarsa made from Arwa rice and sesame-jaggery in large quantities along with Tilkut before Makar Sankranti.
Special Sugar Free Tilkut
This year, about 30 different varieties are available in Tilkut market of Mahagama. The price of Tilakut starts from Rs 240 per kg to Rs 450 per kg. The special thing is that this time a special Tilkut has also been prepared keeping in mind the diabetic patients. This Tilkut is almost 90 percent sugar free, in which only 10 percent jaggery has been used. Its price has been kept at Rs 400 per kg, about which a lot of enthusiasm is being seen among the people.
Preparation for Makar Sankranti
Tilkut shopkeeper Sunil Kumar Gupta told that in view of the huge crowd on 14th January on the day of Makar Sankranti, Tilkut is already being prepared in large quantities this time. He says that this time there should be no shortage of Tilkut like last year, hence the production has been increased. He also told that this stall will be set up till January 20.
How is Tilakut made?
Regarding the process of making Tilakut, the artisans told that first of all the sesame seeds are roasted well in the pan. After this, the sesame seeds are ground coarsely in a pestle. Then jaggery is added to it and the mixture is prepared well. Finally this mixture is given different shapes and sold in the market under different names. As Makar Sankranti approaches, this sweetness of Tilkut is further enhancing the beauty of the markets.
