Chillai Kalan since when?
Due to cold weather, the water level of rivers, springs, lakes and wells in Kashmir has reduced. Light accumulation has also been seen on the upper surface of the water. Soon ‘Chillai Kalan’ is also going to start in the hilly areas, in which there is severe cold for 40 days and the water also freezes. ‘Chillai Kalan’ will start from 21st December and will last till 30th January. In this season, people living in hilly areas make special preparations and collect all the necessary things in advance and keep them in the house. It is very important to have snowfall in the season of Chillai Kalan, because due to snowfall all the lakes of the valley get filled with water and there is no drought in summer. This is a unique confluence of nature and tradition of the people of the valley.
Rain improved the situation in Tamil Nadu
Heavy rains during the north-east monsoon and continuous inflow of Kaveri river have significantly improved water storage in irrigation tanks in the Kaveri delta of Tamil Nadu, bringing major relief to farmers ahead of the main farming season. Of the 764 irrigation tanks in the delta region, 386 are now completely filled, which is significantly higher than just 42 tanks recorded three months ago. Apart from this, 329 tanks are filled more than 75 percent of their capacity, which shows improvement in water availability in the agricultural region of Tamil Nadu. There are 737 system tanks fed by rivers and canals in the delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai and Pudukottai, which also receive rain water, as well as 27 non-system tanks which are completely dependent on rain. Thanjavur district has the highest number of irrigation tanks at 561, followed by Pudukottai with 170 tanks. Thiruvarur has 28 tanks, while Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai have three and two tanks respectively.
