In today’s time the problem of cataract has become very common. Even young people are falling prey to it. After a time the only solution remains operation. Which also costs a lot of money. In such a situation, this is not possible for all the people. But this problem has now been resolved. Its free operation has started two days a week in a government hospital in Jamshedpur.
Sadar Hospital has taken an important step towards saving eyesight and providing relief to poor patients. Now free cataract surgery will be done two days every week in Sadar Hospital located at Parsudih. This facility will be available every Wednesday and Friday. This initiative will provide great benefit to those patients who could not get expensive treatment in private hospitals due to financial weakness.
This system has been started under the National Blindness Control Programme. Till now, due to lack of government system, cataract patients had to go to private hospitals, where the cost of one eye operation was Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000. The new initiative will provide great relief to patients especially belonging to poor and needy sections and they will not need to go out.
In the review meeting held on December 8 by the State Blindness Control Officer, Ranchi, instructions were given to ensure regular cataract surgery in all the sadar hospitals. Under this, the system of regular surgery two days a week has been implemented in Sadar Hospital, Khasmahal of East Singhbhum district. According to the hospital administration, this will help in reducing the cases of blindness in the district.

The hospital administration said that patients suffering from cataract will first be screened and preliminary examined. Patients found eligible in the test will be admitted for operation after blood test, BP and sugar test. A specialized team of the eye department, including experienced eye doctors, nurses and technical staff, will carry out the surgery.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Sahir Pal said that facilities are being continuously increased in Sadar Hospital. Poor patients will get a lot of benefits by starting cataract surgery. He said that to make the scheme effective, the District Nodal Officer, Incharge Medical Officer, Sahiya, ANM and Eye Assistants have been instructed to identify the patients in their respective areas and send them to the Sadar Hospital.
According to the data of the Health Department, about 3,500 to 4,000 new cataract patients appear in the district every year. Cataracts account for 60 to 65 percent of total blindness cases in India. With this initiative of free surgery in Sadar Hospital, it will be possible to operate 20 to 25 patients every week, due to which the eyesight of hundreds of people will be restored.
