The force that breaks the backs of miscreants: Anti-Romeo Squad
Anti-Romeo Squad is a special police unit which is formed to stop molestation, stalking and eve teasing against women. There are mostly women constables who roam around in plain clothes. Their job is to keep an eye on suspicious activities and take immediate action as soon as a complaint is received. If someone harasses a girl, the squad members catch him and take him to the police station. In such cases, sections of atrocities on women are imposed and under this, jail or fine is imposed.
Lesson learned from UP model: How effective has this squad been?
To understand this, it is important to look at the structure and work of the anti-Romeo squad in Uttar Pradesh. Such squads are being run in UP as part of the Mission Shakti campaign since 2017. In the recent ‘Mission Shakti 5.0’ campaign, the anti-Romeo team checked 1,08,292 public places and identified around 9.8 lakh people. After this, about 2,542 FIRs were registered and 3,972 people were arrested. Not only this, according to the UP DGP, from 2017 to February 2025, the squad investigated more than 4.00 crore persons, registered 24,009 cases and took action against 32,291 people.
Daughters of Bihar will not be afraid: Keep an eye on Romeo Squad’s bravado
In UP, these squads have become a powerful tool of the police, it is also being said that their vision towards public safety is bringing a new feeling of ‘respect and trust’. The cases of eve teasing reduced by 30 percent, especially in cities like Lucknow-Kanpur, it has been very effective. It was reactivated in August 2024 and in September 2025, CM Yogi Adityanath ordered to make it more active. However, in 2017 itself, the High Court gave guidelines that only criminals should be targeted and not loving couples. Still, overall it was effective. Women’s complaints increased because trust was built.
Samrat Chaudhary’s strictness: Crackdown on mafia and social media also
Samrat Chaudhary also said that criminals, liquor, sand and land mafias will not be spared. Police have been instructed to take strict action without fear. He has also raised the issue of sending mobiles and food from outside to jails. If any officer or employee is found to be complicit, he will also be held accountable. The Home Minister has also made it clear that the police will take immediate action against those who abuse, spread rumors or tarnish someone’s image on social media.
