Uttarakhand Weather Update: Cold wave has hit the hilly areas. There will be heavy snowfall in Uttarakhand from Chamoli to Uttarkashi. There are many areas where the temperature will be in minus.
Rishikesh: The weather in Uttarakhand is again going to be cold and cold wave on 11th December. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not only predicted a drop in temperature during this period, but has also warned of strong winds, fog and dense clouds in many parts of the state. The effect of cold wave is going to be strongest in the morning and night in both the hilly and plain areas of the state. There will be light sunshine during the day, but despite this the temperature will remain below normal.
According to the information received from the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in the plains is likely to be around 4°C–6°C in the morning. In hilly districts like Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh the temperature can go from –1°C to 2°C. Frost will appear due to accumulation of dew in high altitude areas, which can make footpaths and roads slippery. Due to strong winds and humidity, the effect of “Wind Chill” will make the temperature feel lower, which will make you feel more cold. Along with this, fog or dense mist may also occur, which will reduce visibility and increase the risk of slipping on the roads.
The temperature will not increase despite sunshine in the afternoon.
There will be light sunshine in the afternoon, but the temperature is not expected to rise much. The maximum day temperature in the plains can be around 14°C–17°C. In hilly areas it is likely to remain limited to between 7°C–11°C. Snowy winds may blow in the Himalayan regions, whose speed is expected to be 12–20 km/h. These winds will reduce the body temperature rapidly. Therefore, even when the sun is shining, the feeling of warmth will be less.
What will be the temperature in the plains?
By evening and night the cold will become deeper. In the plains the night temperature may fall to around 3°C-5°C. In the mountains it is likely to reach -3°C to 0°C. Temperature falling below zero will result in freezing conditions. There may be a situation of freezing of water and formation of thin layer of ice in many areas, especially where it has rained or snowed in the past. This situation can increase the danger while traveling at night. Humidity is expected to be between 40%-78%, which will further increase the effect of cold. Visibility can also be very low at night, especially in the plains.
