In the beautiful and historical city of Mandu in Madhya Pradesh, there is such a heritage, which at first glance looks like a pond, but is actually a secret palace built under the ground. The path to reach this palace passes through water. This place named Champa Stepwell is surprising people even after 500 years.
This Champa Stepwell of Mandu in Dhar district is a wonderful example of workmanship of that period of 15th-16th century. When seen from above, it looks like a reservoir, but as we descend, one floor after another becomes visible. Its rooms and tunnels built under the ground are no less than a maze.
It is said that the shape of this stepwell is like the Champa flower, which has five petals. Some people believe that its water smelled like Champa flowers, hence it was named Champa Stepwell. Today this place has its own special identity as a priceless heritage of Mandu.
According to historians, this stepwell built during the Malwa Sultanate period was not built just to store water. It was also a safe haven for the royal family. Due to the ship being near the palace, it was used by kings, queens and special guests.

The structure of Champa Stepwell is really amazing. There are arched rooms, shelves built on stones and interconnected basements. Stairs have been built to reach the rooms. Special arrangements have been made for light and air, due to which the inside remains cool even in extreme heat.
The paths inside the stepwell are so intricate that a first-time visitor can easily get lost. Some secret paths lead directly to Munj Talab. In case of attack, the royal women would jump into the water of the stepwell and come out safely through these secret tunnels.
The Turkish style Hammam built inside this stepwell is also a special attraction. This hamam was used only by the royal family. Star-like designs have been made on the ceiling, which lets in light and gives the feeling of seeing the sky even during the day. Cold and hot water facilities were also available here.
Nowadays, Champa Stepwell is considered a great example of engineering. It’s water management, safety and comfort. There is a unique combination of all three. This is the reason why even after 500 years, its strength and structure astonishes people. Places of interest like Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal and Roopmati Mandap can also be seen nearby.
