Nagpur. A Karnataka jail inmate, suspected of making threat calls to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, has denied his involvement in the case and the police will now record the statements of five of them, the Nagpur Police Commissioner said on Tuesday. The Karnataka Police said on Sunday that investigations so far have revealed that the alleged caller, Jayesh Pujari, is an inmate of Belagavi’s Hindalga jail and has been sentenced to death by a court in a murder case.
The caller, claiming himself to be a member of the Dawood Ibrahim gang, had made a threat call to the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister’s Nagpur office and demanded Rs 100 crore. Talking to reporters here, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said that the Pujari, a resident of Mangaluru, was questioned by a team of Nagpur police on Monday, but he denied making threat calls to Gadkari. He said that the Nagpur police will now record the statements of five people, who were contacted by the suspect through the mobile phone used to make the threat calls. All these five are residents of Karnataka.

The IPS officer said that the call detail record (CDR) of the mobile number used to threaten the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader was thoroughly scrutinised. Kumar said that as per the CDR, Pujari had also called these persons and they would be interrogated by the Nagpur police team present in Belagavi and their statement would be recorded under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). He told that the calls were received at 11.25 am, 11.45 am and 12.32 pm.
