New Drug Lower Cholesterol: Science is bent upon making life very easy. Cures for many incurable diseases are being discovered. We are even very close to developing a cancer vaccine. Meanwhile, scientists are conducting clinical trials of a new medicine. This medicine reduces high cholesterol. In clinical trials, this medicine has reduced high cholesterol by 60 percent. For this, scientists have prepared a molecule that suppresses PCSK9. It is called Enlicitide. This is a kind of medicine. It can be given to patients not by injection but as an oral medicine. In clinical trials, this medicine reduced cholesterol by 60 percent.
According to the report published in JAMA journal, Phase 3 clinical trial has been conducted to test this medicine. 303 patients from 17 countries were included in this. People in the family of these people already had high cholesterol, hence these people developed high cholesterol. This condition is called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. All these patients were already taking statins. During the Phase 3 trial, these people were given new PCSK9 inhibitors for 24 weeks. Some people were given placebo. At the end of the study it was observed that this drug reduced cholesterol levels by an average of 58.2%. That is, this study shows that Enlicitide as an oral PCSK9 inhibitor can reduce cholesterol levels to a great extent.
How does this medicine work?
Enlicitide is a PCSK9 inhibitor given orally. PCSK9 is a protein that binds to bad cholesterol receptors present in the liver and helps in destroying them. These LDL receptors work to remove bad cholesterol from the blood. When PCSK9 reduces the number of LDL receptors, less LDL is cleared from the blood, which increases cholesterol levels in the blood. Enlicitide blocks PCSK9, allowing more LDL receptors to remain active, thereby increasing the liver’s ability to clear cholesterol. This reduces cholesterol in the blood. This medicine offers the option of taking it daily in pill form. Till now PCSK9 inhibitors are given in the form of injection. It is given every two to four weeks. But when oral tablets are introduced, the need for injections may end.

Cholesterol is a sticky substance like wax. It is part of the fat produced in our body. A small amount of it is necessary but generally cholesterol increases due to disturbances in our lifestyle. When cholesterol increases, it sticks to the walls of the blood arteries. This reduces blood flow. Due to this, blood starts having difficulty reaching the heart. Sometimes the clump of cholesterol deposited in the arteries suddenly bursts. Due to all these reasons, conditions like heart attack, stroke and heart failure occur. Till now, statins are taken for cholesterol. This medicine does not allow cholesterol to increase further but cannot eliminate the already accumulated cholesterol. But if the trial of this medicine is successful then cholesterol can also be eliminated.
