Nainital: The increasing cold in the mountains is no longer just a mere feeling of the weather, but has started having a serious impact on people’s health. As the temperature is continuously falling, problems related to bones and joints are increasing rapidly. The health effects of cold are now visible in Sarovar city of Uttarakhand also. These days, the Ortho department in BD Pandey District Hospital of Nainital is filled with increasing crowd of patients. Apart from the elderly, bone and muscle problems are also increasing among youth and children.
Dr. Narendra Rawat, orthopedic specialist of the district hospital, says that in cold weather the blood flow of the body becomes slower than normal. Because of this, oxygen and nutrients do not reach the tissues in full form, and this is the reason why pain in joints, knees, waist and muscles increases as the cold increases. There are many patients in whom it becomes difficult to walk after waking up in the morning due to stiffness.
patients arriving daily
Dr. Rawat says that 60 to 70 ortho patients are reaching the hospital every day, out of which 20 to 30 patients come complaining of pain related to arthritis. This number is increasing with every passing day. He says that this number is likely to increase further due to severe cold in December and January. Most of the patients who come to the hospital for treatment are those who suffer from severe pain in the waist, knees, back and shoulders. In many elderly patients, as the cold increases, the pain of old fractures also emerges. At the same time, the effect of cold is more visible in people who already have arthritis, osteoporosis or muscle problems.
Doctors say that due to cold in hilly areas, people avoid going out in the morning, due to which physical activity reduces. Due to this the muscles start becoming weak and the pressure on the joints increases. In such a situation, the problems of the patients increase further. Dr. Rawat further explains that ortho patients should take special care during cold days. First of all it is important to avoid cold. Keep the body warm, especially cover the knees and waist with good woolen clothes. Sunbathing is very beneficial, because it produces Vitamin D in the body, which helps in keeping the bones strong. Light exercise is also necessary, so that the blood flow in the body remains normal.

Such patients are also advised to take lukewarm bath, hot water fomentation and take balanced, nutritious food so that the body can get the necessary nutrients. The cold is about to increase further, in such a situation the people of Nainital will have to be conscious of their health. If precautions are taken in time, ortho related problems can be avoided to a great extent.
