Must have heard the name of “Mysore Pak”. Also, I guess you must have tasted it too. Presently, Mysore Pak is available in almost every part of the country. But, do you know that it was made as an ’emergency sweet’ and like many other mines, it has also reached the people from the king’s kitchen.
So as it is written in its name ‘Mysore Pak’, it was invented in Mysore itself. Another food associated with Mysore which is famous everywhere is ‘Mysore Dosa’. It will be talked about in detail sometime. At the moment, we know what the story of Mysore Pak is and how it has reached the sweet shop near us.
So in the royal kitchen, food was going on for the king of Mysore, Krishnaraja Wodeyar. Wodeyar was very fond of eating and drinking. There was a big kitchen in Amba Vilas Palace (Rajmahal) in which European to home-grown food was made. There were also preparations for the bhog offered to God in a separate section here.

Made under ‘Emergency Sweet’
One day food was prepared for Raja and a sweet dish was falling short in his plate. His royal cook Kakasura Madappa was knocking this thing out. During this time the thali was introduced and the king started eating. Madappa started making a new dish during this time.
Didn’t even know the name
He made a dessert by mixing gram flour, desi ghee and sugar in a special proportion. As soon as the meal was over, he was presented to the king. The hot dessert dissolved as soon as it was put in the mouth. Connoisseurs of food, King Krishnaraja understood that something special was there. He called Madappa and asked the name of the dish. Madappa made this for the first time, so ‘Mysore Pak’ came out of his mouth.
This is how the house arrived
Raja liked this dish so much that he decided that Raj should be taken out of the kitchen and the taste of this dish should be passed on to the whole public. For this for the first time, a special shop was built near Rajmahal where it was made available. Its flavor spread across India.
Now many varieties

There is a ‘Guru Sweets’ shop in Devaraja Market in Mysore, which is actually running Kakasura Madappa’s great-grandson right now. There is no tampering with the actual dish here. It is still being prepared from the same old recipe, which affected the king.
