Hyderabad Mushroom Rock: The Mushroom Rock of the University of Hyderabad campus is a rare natural formation formed by thousands of years of wind and soil erosion. Protected by ASI, this rock is an important part of the geological heritage of the city from the Precambrian era. With proper conservation, management and permission from the university, it can be turned into a major tourist and educational destination.
HyderabadThis city, famous for technology and historical heritage, also hides within itself a natural wonder which can surprise anyone, Located on the serene and spacious campus of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), ‘Mushroom Rock’ is a geological formation formed by natural erosion over thousands of years, According to scientists, this rock is believed to be related to the Precambrian era, that is, its age can go up to millions of years, which makes it one of the oldest natural monuments of the city,
This huge rock present in the Hyderabad University campus is considered most special due to its unique structure. The rock is balanced on two very narrow bases, while its upper part is wide and raised, much like a giant mushroom. Because of this unique shape it is called “Mushroom Rock” or Pedestal Rock. Its balanced shape appears as if nature has carefully carved it.
How was this unique structure formed?
Experts say that this rock is the result of wind and soil erosion. This process is also called Aeolian Abrasion.
- The strong wind blowing at high altitude and the dust particles kept hitting the rock continuously.
- The stone in the middle of the rock was soft, which gradually wore away.
- Due to this process, the upper part (which was hard) remained safe and with time it assumed a canopy-like shape.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has included it among the important heritage rocks of Hyderabad. Interestingly, similar natural formations are found in the Vindhya mountain range and many parts of South India, but such a safe and huge structure is rarely seen within the city.
How to reach Mushroom Rock?
This rock is within the University of Hyderabad (UoH) campus located in the Gachibowli area. The nearest metro stations are Raidurg and Hitech City. It can be easily reached from there via bus, cab or auto. Prior permission from the University Administration is required to enter the campus and access the site.
Conservation challenges and future prospects
Due to uncontrolled urbanization, many historical rocks of Hyderabad are in danger. However, organizations like Society to Save Rocks have been working for the conservation of these rocks for a long time. According to him, out of about 25 protected rock sites in the city, about 10 sites can be developed as Geological Monuments (Geo Heritage Site).
Mushroom rock is considered the most important among these. If proper management, tourist guidance and scientific interpretation centers are developed, this site can become a major educational and tourist attraction of Hyderabad, highlighting the geological past of the city.
