A proposal has been sent to the government to get GI tag for Gajak of Meerut. The High Power Committee has given the green signal to this proposal. Significantly, Meerut’s Revdi and Gajak are famous in the country. The history of Meerut’s Gajak is about 150 years old. It is said that it was started by Lala Ramchandra Sahay in 1944 by grinding jaggery and sesame to make strips and gazak. Revdi Gajak has more than five hundred shops in Meerut.
Same is the condition of Meerut’s Band Baja industry. This industry will also get GI tag. Musical instruments business of Meerut is also about one hundred and forty years old. Every small and big instrument of the band bazaa is made here. Many families have been doing the work of making Band Baja for many generations. This industry will also get sanjeevani from GI tag. GI i.e. Geographical Indications tag is a kind of label given to any product. In this, a product is given a special identity on the basis of its geographical location.
