Merkel slams owners of social media platforms
German Chancellor Merkel stated that freedom of thought is a fundamental right of primary importance, and this fundamental right cannot be interfered with. This should be done only through legislation and within the framework defined by the legislature. According to the decision of the management of social media platforms, no account should be banned. After the violence in the US Parliament, social media platform Twitter had permanently banned President Donald Trump’s account on 9 January. In a statement issued by Twitter, it was said that Donald Trump’s Twitter account is suspended permanently in view of the possibility of further violence.
Facebook also announced a ban on Trump’s account on 7 January on charges of inciting violence in the US Parliament. Facebook Chief Mark Zuckerberg wrote that the risk of allowing Trump to post is simply too dangerous. Zuckerberg said that Facebook has removed President Trump’s post because we have decided that they can be used to incite further violence.
