A member of the UK armed forces died in Ukraine while witnessing testing of a new defensive capability on Tuesday morning, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) announced.
“He was injured in a tragic accident while watching Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability, far from the front lines,” he said in a statement.
The individual’s family has been informed, he added.
Defense Secretary John Healey said he was “devastated by the death of a UK serviceman in Ukraine”.
“My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues as they grieve for a loved one.”
It is not known in what service the individual served or what his role was.
The BBC understands that the incident is not believed to have been caused by hostile fire.
The Ministry of Defense said it would have no further comment.
The UK government has never confirmed the number of military personnel in Ukraine, but has previously acknowledged a small number in the country to support Ukraine’s armed forces and provide security for diplomatic staff.
Shadow Defense Secretary James Cartlidge said he was “deeply saddened to hear the tragic news that a member of the UK armed forces has died this morning in Ukraine”.
“My deepest condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
