Gogavil Lake located in Manihari block of Katihar became the sixth Ramsar site of the state and the 94th Ramsar site of the country. This has given global recognition to Bihar tourism and biodiversity. Now the possibilities of eco-tourism have increased a lot here.
Katihar. Gogavil Lake located at Manihari in Katihar district has been listed as a Ramsar site of international importance. This is a very special opportunity for the growth of Bihar tourism. It has become the sixth Ramsar wetland of Bihar and the 94th Ramsar wetland of the country, which will further strengthen the dominance of not only Katihar but the entire state on the global tourism map.
Very special for foreign birds
This area spread over 86.63 hectares in the basin of Ganga and Mahananda rivers, where more than 30 exotic species and more than 60 indigenous species of birds migrate every year between November and February. Their numbers used to be even higher, but continuous efforts towards conservation have once again made this site a center of global attraction.
The district will get global recognition
Katihar District Magistrate Manesh Kumar Meena described this achievement as very encouraging and said that inclusion of Gogavil Lake in the Ramsar site is a matter of pride for the district. It will be further developed from both environmental and tourism perspectives. Dr. Raj Aman Singh, founder member of Gogavil Lake Development Committee, expressed happiness over this recognition and said that now Gogavil Lake has got recognition at the international level. We were trying for this for years. This site has already been a center of attraction for bird lovers and environmentalists, and now after becoming a Ramsar site, its identity has been established at the global level.
Immense possibilities of eco-tourism
Gogavil Lake is a unique structure surrounded by greenery and natural beauty, which comes alive with the chirping of millions of migratory birds during the winter season. Inclusion of this lake in the Ramsar list is not only important from the point of view of biodiversity conservation, but also opens up immense possibilities for eco-tourism here in the future. With this historic achievement, Gogavil has now been marked on the world tourism map. Environment, biodiversity and tourism – this lake has now emerged as the new identity of Katihar in all three areas.
