That’s why on the day of Makar Sankranti, when the Sun is Uttarayan, the deities are worshiped on the earth and they are wished for happiness and prosperity.

Makar Sankranti in North India, Lohri in Haryana-Punjab, Khichdi Sankranti in Garhwal, Uttarayan in Gujarat, Pongal in Tamil Nadu. Whereas in Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh it is called only Sankranti. Whereas, in Assam this festival is celebrated by the name of Bihu.
