New Delhi. Many times other countries have tried to impose war on our country. But, the script of the end of every war has been written by Indian soldiers with their courage and sacrifice. Many names are included in this victory march of India, one of these names is that of Paramvir Chakra awardee Major Hoshiar Singh. He is a symbol of bravery, devotion to duty and amazing patience. After leaving this world on 6 December 1998, he left behind a history which will continue to inspire generations for centuries.
Defeated the enemy in the 1965 war
Born on 5 May 1937 in Sisana village of Haryana, Hoshiar Singh had discipline and a strong nature since childhood. Father Chaudhary Heera Singh was a farmer and mother Mathuri Devi was a housewife. He got married to Dhanno Devi while studying in 7th class. Later he had three sons. Despite starting family life at an early age, service to the country was prominent in his dreams. After studying just one year in Jat College, Rohtak, he joined the army. Received commission in 3 Grenadiers Regiment on 30 June 1963 and got first posting in NEFA. The 1965 war was the first major military experience of his career, but his real identity was formed in the 1971 war.
Major Hoshiar did not stop
In December 1971, a strong bridgehead was to be built across the Basantar river in Shakargarh sector, where there were deep mines on both sides and heavy machine guns of Pakistan on top. The responsibility of this difficult mission was on 3 Grenadiers. At that time, Hoshiar Singh, working in the rank of Major, was the commander of C Company, who had to capture the inaccessible area of Jarpal. There was rain of bullets, thunder of cannons and death was standing in front. But, Major Hoshiar Singh did not stop. There was heavy crossfire on his company, but he moved forward and repulsed the enemy in a hand-to-hand fight. Subsequently, on 16 December the enemy counterattacked three times, twice with tanks. But Major Singh inspired the soldiers by going from trench to trench and continued the fight firmly on every front.
that day of 17th december
The next day, i.e. on 17 December, the enemy attacked with heavy artillery and an entire battalion. Meanwhile, a shell exploded near Major Singh and he was seriously injured. However, even after this his role in the battlefield did not end. When an enemy shell fell on the post and the soldiers deployed there were injured, then Major Hoshiar Singh himself jumped into the machine gun pit, took charge of the machine gun and attacked in such a way that the Pakistani army ran away leaving 85 dead bodies and its commanding officer here. Despite this, they did not retreat till the ceasefire. He remained at the front till his last breath. For his amazing bravery, he received India’s highest gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra. After retiring as a colonel, he breathed his last on 6 December 1998. Major Saheb is not among us today, but his story is an inspiration for every Indian. He was a warrior who remained steadfast on the path of duty till the last moment.
