Chandrapur (Maharashtra): A police ‘mock drill’ at a temple in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur courted controversy when personnel posing as terrorists were allegedly raising slogans belonging to a particular community. A group of lawyers has submitted a memorandum to the district police officers on the issue. At the same time, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ravindra Singh Pardeshi said on Sunday that all efforts will be made to ensure that such mistake does not happen again. The ‘mock drill’ was organized on January 11 at the famous Mahakali temple here. In this, a group of terrorists captured a place of worship and took the devotees hostage.
Farat Baig, who is part of the group of lawyers, said, ‘Videos have come to the fore of personnel playing the role of terrorists in the mock drill. It portrays a community in a negative way and gives the impression that all terrorists are from this community.

Baig said, ‘We have submitted a memorandum to the district SP’s office against such sloganeering and depiction. This act of police is tantamount to defaming a community. Obviously, the preparation of the ‘mock drill’ must have been seen by the SP and other senior officers.
When contacted, Superintendent of Police Ravindra Singh Pardeshi said that his department would ‘take necessary steps to ensure that such an error does not happen again’. Officials said the ‘mock drill’ was conducted by personnel of local police, anti-terrorist squad, special unit C-60 and other forces.
