Thane: Navi Mumbai Police has busted a gang that duped students of Rs 3.30 crore in the name of admission in medical colleges. Five people have been arrested in this case. Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe told reporters on Wednesday that the accused had cheated students from Mumbai, Gujarat and other places besides Navi Mumbai in Thane district. He told that for the last five-seven years, the gang members active in pre-medical, used to contact students who got low marks in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). In lieu of hefty amount, they were offered admission in medical colleges.
Students were given fake admit cards
The official said that the accused used to gain the trust of the victim students by claiming to have influence in the management of seven prominent medical colleges in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and took money from them in cash or digital mode by providing them with forged admit cards. The officer said that the accused used to get the details of the students from those websites. where he applied for admission. According to the official, the accused used to take students to medical colleges and Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) offices to show their influence and then give them fake admit cards.
Chhattisgarh girl student cheated of 33.5 lakhs
Bharambe said the police received the first complaint when the accused allegedly duped a girl student from Chhattisgarh and took Rs 33.5 lakh from her on the pretext of getting her admission in a medical college in Navi Mumbai’s Nerul area. The girl student was given a fake admit card after which the Nerul police registered a case in this regard. Regarding this matter, the police worked on various intelligence and technical information.

Five accused arrested
Police has arrested five accused. They have been identified as Saurabh Krishna Upadhyay (39), Iftikhar Ahmed, Mushtaq Ahmed alias Abhay Singh alias Gautam (31) (both from Noida), Luv Awadhkishore Gupta (35). He told that both Aqib Naushad Ahmed (28) and Abhijat Radheshyam Singh (41) of Mumbai are residents of Ghaziabad.
Fraud with students from states other than Maharashtra
With the arrest of five accused, the police claimed to have detected cases of cheating registered in Navi Mumbai, Mumbai and Bhandara district of Maharashtra. Police said that cases were registered against the accused earlier also at various places in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Navi Mumbai, Gujarat, Palghar and Mumbai. Bharambe has appealed to the students preparing for medicine not to fall prey to such fraudsters and contact the Navi Mumbai Police if they have been duped.
