Lucknow: The ‘unique mall’ of Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow has become a topic of discussion. This is such a mall, where any poor person can come and take warm clothes and many other things for free. These clothes donated by well wishers help rickshaw pullers, labourers, slum dwellers and other underprivileged sections of the society to fight against the cold during the winter months.
This ‘unique mall’ runs for three months of the year (December, January and February) and offers woolen clothes collected from donors to the poor. This series is going on for the last five years.
Everything is free for the poor
Dr. Ahmad Raza Khan, who runs this mall, said, ‘At other places and occasions, woolen clothes are distributed to the needy and where the recipients are generally hesitant to accept them. On the contrary, a person desirous of buying woollens can enter Anokha Mall as if he is going to shop in a shopping mall and get his clothes, shoes etc. of his choice measured.’

According to Khan, a proper record is kept of the donors as well as the receivers of clothes, shoes etc. at Anokha Mall. He said, ‘This is done so that no one can take undue advantage of this mall which helps the needy people. In the past, some people took clothes from here and sold them in the market.
According to Khan, clothes, sandals, suitcases, school uniforms, blankets and quilts are also being made available to the poor at Anokha Mall. He told that most of the doctors are involved in donating in the mall.

Khan said, “We ensure that the clothes and other items are clean and fit for use.” He told, ‘Four employees operate Anokha Mall daily from 10 am to 6 pm. Last year around 3,000 to 4,000 people bought clothes from this mall. Most of the people who take clothes are rickshaw pullers, laborers and people living in slums.
Regarding the name of the mall, Khan said, ‘Anokha means different from everyone. This is a mall where you can donate your clothes and also take them. And the most important thing is that here you do not spread your hand in front of anyone.
The 48-year-old Khan said initially it was difficult to motivate people to donate clothes, but once he realized the true motive behind the initiative, he wholeheartedly supported it.
People praised and donated too
Praising the initiative, Bhaskar Singh, a resident of IIM Road, said, ‘The unique mall reminds me of the lines from Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s famous poem ‘Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high’. This initiative should be appreciated.
At the same time, Nishant, a resident of Vikas Nagar, wrote in his Facebook post, ‘Ultimately donated clothes at Anokha Mall. This is certainly a unique mall, because the needy need not stretch their hands to beg. They can take clothes or shoes of their choice as per their requirement without being the subject of any camera and without paying anything.
