Thousands of passengers across the country are facing problems.
IGI Airport Flight Operation: Delhi and surrounding areas as well as entire North, Eastern and Central India are experiencing severe cold these days. Normal life has become disrupted due to dense to very dense fog. Dense fog affected life and traffic in Delhi and North India for the seventh consecutive day. On Sunday too, there was huge disruption in trains and flights due to fog and mist. According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), similar conditions may persist for the next two days, although after that the intensity of the fog is likely to reduce. Especially due to fog at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport), the operation of domestic and international flights has been adversely affected.
More than 100 flights had to be canceled at Delhi Airport, while more than 500 flights were delayed. A total of more than 4,000 flights have been affected in the last one week. Despite the fog, there has been a slight improvement in the air quality of the city, but the Air Quality Index (AQI) still remains in the very poor category. On Sunday 21 December 2025, visibility remained very low in many areas of Delhi. In Safdarjung, visibility was only 200 meters between 1.30 am and 2.30 am, while in Palam it remained up to 300 meters. According to IMD, visibility of 200 to 500 meters is considered as moderate fog and 50 to 200 meters is considered as dense fog.
effect of western disturbance
The fog is caused by a western disturbance, which led to snowfall and rain in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. There is fresh snow in areas like Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Sadhna Top. The Meteorological Department says that this western disturbance will weaken by Tuesday 23 December. On the other hand, more than 50 trains ran late in Northern Railway, in which the delay time ranged from 30 minutes to more than 6 hours. On Sunday, the minimum temperature of Delhi was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature was 18.1 degrees Celsius. According to weather experts, the intensity of fog may reduce somewhat after December 24, but there is a possibility of a long period of dense fog again in January.
Temperature increased but melting continued
On Sunday, December 21, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius, which was much higher than 6.1 degrees Celsius the day before and 1.3 degrees more than the normal temperature of the season. The maximum temperature was 18.1 degrees Celsius, which is four degrees below normal, but higher than Saturday’s 16.9 degrees Celsius. Despite this the melting continues. The weather department has also predicted heavy snowfall and rain. According to the department, there is a possibility of snow storm at some places in the high altitude areas of Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh and North-Eastern Himachal Pradesh till Monday.
