In view of this, lettuce has now become an important option to increase their income. It is a nutritious and quick-growing crop, which is in high demand in big hotels and restaurants.
Barabanki: Nowadays, farmers are giving importance to the cultivation of such crops which have good demand in the market and from which they can get good profits. Salad leaf, also known as lettuce, is one of these crops. It is a foreign crop rich in nutritional and medicinal properties, which is available in red and green colors and many of its varieties are found. There is high demand for lettuce in big hotels and restaurants, due to which farmers can earn good income.
Sandy, loamy and granular soil is considered most suitable for the cultivation of lettuce. Also, it is important to have adequate amount of organic matter in the soil and proper drainage, so that the yield is high and of quality. Manish, a young farmer from Badel village of Barabanki district, started cultivating lettuce along with other crops, in which he got good profits. Presently he is cultivating lettuce in about one bigha, due to which he is getting a profit of Rs 50 to 60 thousand from one crop.
Farmer Manish told that earlier he used to cultivate vegetables like capsicum, tomato, spinach and cauliflower, but has started cultivating lettuce for the last two years. In this crop the cost is low and profit is high. The cost of one bigha is around Rs 8 to 10 thousand, while the income from sales is Rs 50 to 60 thousand. The reason for this is that lettuce is mostly used in big hotels and restaurants, hence its price is always good.

Cultivation of lettuce is easy. First of all, the field is deeply plowed and cow dung manure is applied. Then the field is leveled and the seeds are sown. After the plants grow, regular irrigation is done and the crop is ready in about 35 to 40 days, which can be sold in the market daily and earn profit.
