Growing cabbage at home has become easy and profitable in Bihar including Rohtas. According to expert Prem Prakash, with the right variety, soil, regular watering and pest control, big, fresh and crisp cabbage can be grown at home.
Growing cabbage in home gardens is now proving to be easy and profitable in entire Bihar including Rohtas district. According to gardening expert Prem Prakash, this vegetable is crisp in taste, green and full of nutrients. It can be easily grown everywhere in small pots, home gardens or large farms. By adopting proper care and technique, large and tasty heads can be prepared at home.
Prem Prakash explains that first of all it is very important to choose the right cabbage variety. Green cabbage is the most common and light one which can be used in salad, vegetable or soup. Whereas red cabbage is dark in color and rich in antioxidants which can be used for pickles or salads.
Selection of soil for cabbage is also very important. According to Prem Prakash, loose, light and nutrient-rich soil is best. The pH of the soil should be between 6–7. For sowing seeds, it is beneficial to prepare soil by mixing 50% cocopeat or peat moss, 30% compost and 20% sand. Due to this the seeds germinate quickly and the roots remain strong.

The process of sowing seeds is simple. Fill soil in a pot or tray, make a 0.5 cm deep pit, put 1–2 seeds in it and cover it with light soil. Water with a light spray and always keep the soil slightly wet. According to Prem Prakash, seeds germinate in 5–10 days. The seedlings should get enough sunlight or light light, which makes the plants stronger.
Care of seedlings is essential for the growth of cabbage. They should get 5–6 hours of sunlight or 12 hours of grow light per day. Water only when the top part of the soil becomes dry. Giving light fertilizer like liquid compost after two weeks makes the plants strong and with green leaves.
When the seedlings develop 3–4 leaves, they can be transferred to the field or larger pots. The place should be in full sunlight, with fertile and moist soil. Keep a distance of 45–60 cm between plants and 60–80 cm between rows.
Cabbage can also be affected by pests and diseases. Common pests include cabbage worms, aphids, cutworms and flea beetles. According to Prem Prakash, neem oil, BT spray and garlic-chilli spray can be used. Covering the plants with net and removing the caterpillars by hand is also beneficial. It is necessary to monitor the disease from time to time.
Cabbage is usually harvested in 70–100 days. For harvesting, ensure that the head is hard and round and the leaves are tightly wrapped. According to Prem Prakash, growing cabbage at home is hard work but satisfying. With the right soil, care, regular watering and pest control, fresh, big and crisp cabbage can be enjoyed year round.
