The importance of Lakhandei river is not only environmental but also social and geographical. This river flows through about five blocks of Sitamarhi district and enters Muzaffarpur district after covering a distance of about 55 kilometers.
Sitamarhi: The district administration has taken a big step to free the Lakhandei (Lakshmana) river, which is considered the lifeline of Sitamarhi in Bihar, from encroachment. Due to illegal occupation of the river land over the years, its form was continuously shrinking. This not only disrupted the natural flow of the river but also increased the problems of floods and drainage. Now the district administration has started working on a concrete strategy to remove encroachments with the aim of reviving the river. Regarding this matter, District Magistrate Rishi Pandey has given clear instructions to the Municipal Corporation and the concerned departments to identify all the encroachments made on the river land within three days and send notices to the concerned encroachers.
According to the administration, permanent houses, luxurious houses and other constructions have been done illegally on the river land, due to which the natural scope of Lakhandei has been narrowed to a great extent. Describing this situation as serious, the DM has given instructions not to show any laxity. The administration has given a clear warning to the encroachers that if the encroachment is not removed within the stipulated time, bulldozer action will be taken. Keeping in mind the humanitarian aspect, an appeal has also been made to the encroachers to remove their permanent or temporary constructions. The administration says that unnecessary strictness can be avoided by removing encroachments voluntarily, but strict action is certain against those who disobey the order.
