No commercial or chemical colors are used in it. Colors are extracted from stone, brick, clay and grass. To extract color from the grass, it is kept soaked in water overnight, so that the natural color can be prepared properly.
Tribal society has been shown in the painting
There is another specialty of Paitkar painting. Its canvas. A thin layer of cow dung is applied to pre-made handmade paper, giving the paper a natural texture and earthy look. Only after this the painting is started. This painting looks completely different and alive. Every Paitkar painting contains a story in itself. Different aspects of tribal life are depicted in them. At some places there is a scene of a festival or social event, at other places people are seen harvesting paddy, farming, forest life or cooking food in the kitchen. This painting brings out the daily routine of the tribal society, their celebrations, struggles and happiness in a simple but effective manner.
Paitkar painting is a medium to understand one’s roots
Paitkar painting is not just an art for the youth. Rather, it is a medium to understand one’s roots. In today’s modern era, when art is limited to digital mediums, this traditional painting teaches us to connect with nature, labor and society. It tells us that art can be made alive and effective even without any modern means. It is very important for Paitkar painting to be protected and encouraged. If the young generation understands, adopts and takes forward the art, then not only will the tribal artists get respect, but our cultural heritage will also be preserved. This painting of Kolhan is actually the soul of that society, which teaches to live in balance with nature.
