Raipur. Chhattisgarh Agriculture Department is continuously running awareness campaigns to increase the income of farmers from vegetable production during the cold season. He told that the cultivation of cabbage in the cold season is a low cost and better profitable crop in less time, which farmers can easily grow in one acre or two acre area. He said that for the cultivation of cabbage, farmers should buy only improved quality seeds from Krishi Vigyan Kendra or certified seed stores. The Naval Gol which is coming in the market now is of early variety, which was planted about one and a half months ago. Due to this, farmers get their crops quickly and also get good prices in the market.
He further said that after preparing the nursery of cabbage, the plants become ready for transplanting in 20 to 25 days. By cultivating an improved variety, 4 to 5 pieces of cabbage together weigh one kilogram. At present, the price of cabbage in the market is ranging from Rs 40 to Rs 70 per kg, due to which farmers are getting good profits. This crop is prepared at low cost and in its cultivation, urea and DAP fertilizer is used as per requirement.
Burst problem in cabbage
Vimal Sahu also advised the farmers that many times the problem of knot bursting is seen in cabbage. To prevent this, zinc and sulfur should be used, which increases the size of the crop and also gives more weight. He said that using cow dung along with chemical fertilizers maintains the fertility of the soil and improves production.
Crop ready in 60 days
Giving information about the method of farming, he said that after thoroughly hoeing the field, long rows should be made and plants should be planted in Tharha. The cabbage crop is ready in about 60 days. Due to this, farmers start getting income much sooner than long duration crops like paddy. While in paddy cultivation one has to wait for 120 to 150 days, whereas in cabbage cultivation one starts getting income in just 60 days.
He further said that by cultivating cabbage in one acre, the yield can be 200 to 300 quintals. Even if farmers sell it in the market at a minimum wholesale price of Rs 20 per kg, they still get good profits. The cost of seeds is also very low.
