Measures To Keep Wild Animals Away From Fields: As soon as the sugarcane harvesting season begins, the movement of wildlife increases in the villages of West UP adjacent to the forest. Tigers, leopards, elephants or wild boars are often found hiding in sugarcane fields. Therefore, if farmers adopt only 3 important precautions during harvesting, then the threat to life from wildlife hiding in the fields can be reduced to a great extent.
Pilibhit district is one of the major districts making significant contribution to agricultural production in the state. Paddy and sugarcane are mainly cultivated in the district. But there are many areas where crop harvesting is affected every year. The reason for this blockage is not natural disaster or human error but wildlife.
In fact, tigers and leopards are often seen among the population in many areas adjacent to the Tiger Reserve in the district. These tigers and leopards consider the sugarcane and paddy crops as part of the forest and hide in them. At the time of crop harvesting, these wildlife come face to face with humans, which becomes the cause of conflict between humans and wildlife.
The forests of Pilibhit were given the status of Tiger Reserve on 9 June 2014. Since then there has been a significant increase in tourism, but till now about 70 people have lost their lives in tiger attacks. At present the sugarcane crushing season of sugar mills has started. According to the slips, farmers will start harvesting the sugarcane crop. This work is very sensitive and risky in areas adjacent to the forest.

Speaking to Local 18, Manish Singh, Deputy Director of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, said that in the past years, there have been many incidents of human-wildlife conflict while harvesting sugarcane crop in the areas adjacent to the forest. For the safety of farmers, a continuous awareness campaign is being run through an innovation called ‘Bagh Express’. Farmers living in sensitive areas have been appealed to take utmost care during harvesting.
Whenever farmers go to the field for harvesting, they should reach the field making noise and harvest only while making noise. Never go alone for harvesting, go in a group only. If possible, harvest while playing music with a portable speaker. Everyone should not harvest together, rather one or two people should keep monitoring. If your area is sensitive then go to the fields only in sunlight.
