At present Itanagar police is interrogating him.
Kashmiri spying for Pakistan: A young man from Kashmir started opposing the country after being brainwashed. He went so far in the Khilafat that to spy for Pakistan, he reached Arunachal Pradesh, 3 thousand kilometers away from his home, posing as a businessman. Hilal Ahmed, age 26, resident of Jammu and Kashmir. On November 25, he reached Aalo in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh with a valid Inner Line Permit (ILP). He told the security agencies that Papum Pare had come to participate in a trade fair representing the district. The documents were also correct, there was no scope for doubt. But, the insensitive actions of the intelligence agencies caught his attention. His phone calls, messages and activities appeared suspicious. The intelligence agency kept following him, at around 11 pm on December 11, he was taken into custody on charges of espionage.
What was revealed in the investigation was shocking. Hilal Ahmed was spying for Pakistan. He was sending information about sensitive areas – military deployment, border status and other confidential details to Pakistani handlers. This was the third arrest on charges of espionage in the last one week, which made the security agencies more alert. Hilal was handed over to Itanagar police on the morning of 12 December, where further investigation is now underway.
Hilal came to the fair
West Siang SP Kardak Riba said, ‘Hilal had come to participate in the fair, but his actions were suspicious. We took action after receiving intelligence input. Investigation revealed that Hilal used the trade fair as a cover and roamed around the border areas collecting photos and information. Evidence of contacts on Pakistani numbers was found from his phone. This is not an isolated incident. In a sensitive border state like Arunachal, such activities are a big threat to national security.
how big is the network
Agencies are now finding out how big Hilal’s network is. Was he alone or were his associates also active in the state? Did Pakistani ISI have any big plan? Last week two more arrests were of similar nature. The central and state governments have taken this seriously. The Home Ministry has provided additional resources to Arunachal Police.
