Priyanka Gandhi will soon visit Karnataka, elections will be held in May
Bangalore. The Karnataka state women’s unit of the Congress on Thursday urged the party to give at least 30 tickets to women in the upcoming Karnataka assembly elections. Mahila Congress President Pushpa Amarnath said, ‘109 applications have come for tickets, women have applied for tickets in about 74 constituencies. Screening is on for candidates who have the potential to win. Along with women MLAs, I recently attended the party’s election meeting in Belagavi, where I requested to give tickets to at least 30 women.
He told reporters here that winnability would be the criteria for ticket distribution. Pushpa said, ‘But, getting so many applications from women is a revolution in itself, there is awareness to ask for tickets, it is a good sign.’ Elections for the state’s 224-member assembly will be held by May. Of the 11 women members in the current assembly, six are from the Congress, three from the BJP, one from the JD(S) and one from the Congress. Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is scheduled to address a women’s convention here on January 16, with an aim to garner women’s support ahead of the assembly elections in Karnataka.
