Kanpur Metro News: Kanpur Metro has created history. UP Metro has the lowest energy consumption among the top metro cities of the country. This is not the first time that UPMRC has received this honour. Lucknow Metro has also received this honor in 2019 and 2021. Kanpur Metro is also getting financial savings of about Rs 5 crore from this.
Kanpur. Kanpur Metro of UP has created a new identity in the country in the field of energy conservation. IIT Kanpur station of Kanpur Metro was awarded the Certificate of Merit for energy efficiency in the National Energy Conservation Day function organized at Vigyan Bhawan in the capital Delhi. This honor was given in the presence of President Draupadi Murmu, making this a moment of great pride for Kanpur and Uttar Pradesh. This prestigious award was presented by Union Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC). This honor has been given for reducing energy consumption during metro operations and effective use of modern energy efficient technologies. National Energy Conservation Awards are given by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power. Their objective is to encourage such institutions which are doing better work in the field of energy saving and environmental protection.
Top among 24 metro cities
This is not the first time that UPMRC has received this honour. Earlier in 2019 and 2021, Lucknow Metro has also received the first prize and certificate of merit in the metro railway sector. Now this achievement of Kanpur Metro further proves the strong functioning of UP Metro. UPMRC is a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, which is operating the Lucknow, Kanpur and Agra Metro projects. The special thing is that among the 24 metro cities of the country, the energy consumption per kilometer of the elevated stations of UP Metro is the lowest.
How is energy being saved?
Many modern technologies are being used for energy saving in Kanpur Metro. Regenerative braking system has been installed in metro trains and lifts, due to which energy is reused when braking. LED lighting, energy efficient HVAC systems, smart lifts and escalators have been installed at all stations. Escalators have slow speed and sleep mode facilities, BMS controlled lighting and all power consumption points are being monitored. Energy is also being saved by keeping the temperature balanced at the stations.
how much reduction in consumption
UP Metro is also moving rapidly in the direction of solar energy to reduce dependence on the electricity grid. Rooftop solar plants have been installed in metro stations and depots, which are currently providing 4.41 MW solar energy. There are plans to increase it further in the coming time. UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar said that due to continuous efforts, the energy consumption of the Metro has reduced by about 39 percent. Due to this, about 70 lakh units of electricity is being saved every year, which is also resulting in financial savings of about Rs 5 crore.
